Let me start by saying... WE HAVE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRYSIDE!!!
America is "from Sea to Shining Sea" beautiful; the mountains capped with snow overlooking the cabins with billowing smoke; the hills with goats & green pastures next to the gurgling river; the desert sunset that lights the fire with red, gold, & if you lucky a bright streak of violet as the moon takes hold of the sky.
We live in a beautiful nation. We need to take occasional trips outside the tattered infrastructure that holds this country together to really view the beauty our leaders should be fighting for! (By leaders I mean ANY PERSON with ANY INFLUENCE... yep that means you!) :)
Okay... back to the point, MY KINDLY POLICE ESCORT FROM CORVALLIS, OR!!! I am on my way back to Phoenix. It is 1:30AM, perfect traveling time because no-one is on the road & I timed it to miss the big city rush hour traffic... 19 hours to go! I have my handy dandy Blackberry GoogleMaps Application with my route from the hotel planned to my door! Car's packed, cd's organized, Starbucks DoubleShot & I am on the road.
I get 3 blocks down the street from the hotel when I hit a red light, I was supposed to turn here but the street name was different. I looked down at the BB to confirm with GoogleMaps. I guess I stopped to far away from the light... Next thing I know I hear the loud horn " You can't stop in the middle of the road". I wave my hands sorry and inch to the light.
Then the red & blues... Okay I kinda expected it at this point. AZ plates in OR. "Pull over" rings out over the loudspeaker. I flip my hazards & turn RIGHT at the light... "PULL INTO THE GAS STATION RIGHT NOW!!!" rings out. By then I am a bit freaked out so I whip across the street into the gas station. Around the corner comes another black & white with the red & blues going. By then I have I officer at my driver door & two back-ups at the passenger & rear of the car.
I turned off the car; handed him my license & registration for the rental car; & proceeded to light a cigarette. He asked... "So, how much have you had to drink tonight"... Sarcastically I say "two shots of expresso". " He looked sideways at me and I said " seriously, I haven't had anything alcoholic to drink tonight".
"What are you doing out tonight"
"I am on my way home... I just left the hotel & got a bit turned around and was checking my blackberry to verify my route. I have a serous cold & cough, I hate cold weather, and I JUST WANNA GO HOME!"
He said okay I will be right back.
He comes back to the car and says " Well you started off good by pulling over, but you didn't pull over far enough to the right... & then you made it worse by turning THE WRONG WAY ON A ONE WAY STREET! (That explains why they yelled to turn into the gas station and why they thought I was drunk!) I really don't think you should drive to Phoenix tonight, but the exit out is straight down this street and right @ the highway. Please be careful tonight!"
"Yes sir & you have a
great night!" The second car & officer left, the primary car took off down the street I needed to drive and when I turned at the highway I saw them turn around! YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!! Okay.... you thought I was drunk... but you did your job & for that I applaud you... & you gave me an escort out the city, cause your streets are JACKED-UP!!!I love my little excursions! Always an adventure... & I got a cool coffee mug... I forgot to get a shot glass for my collection! I will take pictures & post them and tell you moreabout some of my great states excursions another time... Another gem from my trip!
